This association was started in 1971 under the name of Coimbatore road transport association. in the year 1987 the association name was amended as Coimbatore Goods Transport Association.
The purpose of starting the Associaiton was to control theLabourers unrest; Rto, Police, Sales tax, Thefts in trucks, Drivers andTtruck owners. The association was started with 30 members with thesubscription of Rs.10/- per month. the present strengh is about100 plus members.
The association was started with Sri. JAGADISH U MEHTA, Sri K.M. NARASIMHAN, Sri. R.S PATHAK, Sri. VENKATESH MURTHY and Sri. M.S.SHARMAas founders. Till 1987 the office bearers and E.C. members were elected once in a year. the system was 17 members elected directly by membersfrom among 17 members they select office bearers.
In 1987 the by -laws were amended to a larger extent. Accordinglyelection rules were changed. by this system the term of officebearers was fixed for two years and office bearers were electeddirectly by member still 1980 we were not having any office. we wererunning the following members offices as the centre for handingthe situation. they are:
1. M/S. PRAKASH ROADLINES PRIVATE LIMITED
2. M/S. HIGHWAY MOVERS
3. M/S. TCI LIMITED
In 1977 during his presidentship SRI. JAGADISH U MEHTA conductedlorry race and distributed prizes to the winners In 1980 moved into a rented building in sukrawarpet. The foundersand E.C. members were deeply involved in sorting out labour and other issues successully. in the meantime they selected second line leadership as they were getting old, under Sri. KALEEL AHMED the all india south zone conference wasconducted successfully on 25-10-1986they entrusted the leadership to Sri, KHALEEL AHMED, Sri.C.K.C NAIR,Sri. K. GANESAN andSri. M.S. GOPALAKRISHNAN. UNDER Sri. KHALEEL AHMEDthe all india south zone conference was conducted sucessfully in 1987. delegates including lorry owners and bus operates from all over india participated.
The chief guest was Shri. G.K.SUNDARAMEx M.P and President of Indian chamber of industry and commerce. He was also the chairman ofthe LAKSHMI MILLS LTD GROUP. In the conference the IG of police andjoint commissioner of sales tax participated and delivered speech. Sri.C.K.C NAIR was the president.
Having found that the labourers unrest brought under controlthey diversified their activities first they formeda committee to formtransport nagar as the flow traffic was increased three fold. The commitee was formed under the leadership of late Shri JAGAADISHU MEHTA as CHAIRMEN, Sri. K. GANESAN as VICE-CHAIRMEN.Sri. M.S. GOPALAKRISHAN as SECRETARY. the committee had taken effortsto move with the govt for providing land to form transport nagar.
Atlast in 1989 the committee decided to form transport nagar onour own at outside coimbatore city limit. they selected Neelambur as acentre. they floated a tenderfrom among the participants one was suitable to us. The members gave consent for it. The process was goingon for 5 to 6 years. about 45 to 50 members showed interest in theproject they were agricultural dry land. the commttee took effortsfor getting that land into industrial land after series of efforts theygot the approval from the secretary to country an land developmentdepartment. they got orders too.Simultaneously efforts were taken by SRI JAGADISH U MEHTA Sri. K. GANESAN, Sri. M.S. GOPALAKRISHNAN & Sri. V.V RAMIREDDY to frametrust deed to form CGTACharitable Trust withso-g. we got the trustregistered on 09-04-1996.when the members were about to startconstructing the buildings in transport nagar, serial bomb blastsoccured in coimbatore city. economy was paralysed and it took 6 to 7years to revive. the members lost the hope of building godowns andgiven up the project it was the time to celebrate silver jubileeconsidering the poor economy on account of bomb blasts they gave upsilver jubilee celebration.
In order to consolidate our unity we called the meeting of sisterassociations from Madurai, Salem, Erode, Tiruppur and Trichy to formfederaton of southern tranporters in 1997. The chennai goods transport association came forward to formthe federation with chennai as head quarters. they called the meetingof southern associations
